Introduction

The choir VoxPat

Growing up in the country of Bartók and Kodály gives us such deep musical roots that none of us can part with, no matter where we live in the world. In kindergarten circle dance and folk music become part of childrenʼs daily lives and from primary school choral music appears: almost every city school has its own choir. Unbelievable, isnʼt it?

The love of music, the memory of the Hungarian choral life brought the VoxPat choir to life in Brussels in February 2018. Our name comes from a combination of the Latin words “vox” (voice) and “expat”, which refers to living abroad for a long time.

We rehearse once a week in Brussels at the Flemish cultural center Den Dam. Our conductor Charlotte Messiaen is half Hungarian, half Belgian, which helps us to gain insight into Belgian choral life and musical culture, too.
